Abstract
Most of the learners in French Departments are” deceived” learners who might have found themselves in French because of their ineligibility for admission in their course of first choice. Having applied for law, accounting or linguistics, securing an admission in French is like a bad surprise, a nightmare. And since these students are disillusioned students not coming voluntarily to French, the teacher must devise a special way of receiving and teaching them. In short, the teacher must improvise a way that will enhance in them a smooth and interesting learning of French. Therefore, the French lecturer will have to find ways of accommodating this group of disenchanted learners. That is why this paper proposes a suitable teaching approach to adopt in these circumstancess of exceptional class based on the experiences of its authors. This article therefore recommends the communicative approach to teaching and learning a foreign language. The theory of communicative competence of Hymes ( 1972 ) , Halliday's theory of functions of language ( 1970 ) and Widdowson's communicative acts ( 1978 ) will constitute a sure theoretical guide to the lecturer of French in his quest for a creative and resourceful way of teaching this special class having in its midst disillusioned studenst.
