Abstract

ABSTRACT A study of the adsorptive property of activated carbon prepared from used tre, maize cob, coconut shell. guinea corn stem and orange peels is reported: Following carbonisation, the samples were activated ut 500℃ using orthophosphoric acid, zinc chloride and potassium hydroxide as activating agents. The adsorp- tion capacity of the activated carbons was determined spectrophotometrically by contacting them separately with standard solutions of methylene blue, methyl red and potassium permanganate. The adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm using least-squares linear regression analysis technique. The monolayer coverage (Xm) and specific surface area (S) of each sample was determined from Langmuir adsorption isotherms.
