Abstract
This study evaluated the effectiveness of the use of message format
and style/time of presentation of televised campaign messages by,
NAFDAC.
Public perception of the campaign messages was sought through a
survey of 400 randomly selected audience members in llorin South,
Kwara State. It v/as found that although campaign messages had high
reach among the audience, access to the televised messages was
restricted to only the network service of the Nigeria Television
Authority and other cable stations not freely available to all residents
of the area. Time of transmission and language of message
dissemination, are among other issues which audience members
believe should he revised to increase accessibility and effectiveness
of the campaigns. The study recommends mat public health
communication campaign planners can make effective use of
television by identifying their target publics, engaging in formative
research and tailoring their messages to suit audience needs through
the use of appropriate television programme formats and suitable and
varied transmission times on as many television channels as possible
(local, cable and network services).
