Abstract
The introduction of Islam to Nigeria, particularly through the trans-Saharan
trade routes and by North African scholars in the 11th century, profoundly
influenced the development of Arabic literature in the region. As Islam spread,
especially in northern Nigeria, Arabic became the language of religious,
scholarly, and intellectual discourse. The Sokoto Caliphate, established by
Uthman dan Fodio in the 19th century, was a major hub for Islamic scholarship,
producing a rich body of Arabic literature. This included religious treatises,
poetry, legal works, and historical chronicles. Scholars like Uthman dan Fodio,
Abdullahi dan Fodio, and Muhammad Bello made significant contributions,
using Arabic to propagate Islamic teachings, social reform, and governance
principles. The flourishing of Arabic poetry often infused with Sufi mysticism
and moral teachings became a prominent literary tradition. Arabic literature also
played a vital role in education, as Quranic schools and madrasas across
northern Nigeria emphasized Arabic literacy for religious instruction. Even
during the British colonial era, Arabic continued to thrive in Islamic courts and
educational institutions, preserving the intellectual legacy of Islamic Nigeria.
Today, Arabic literature remains an integral part of Nigeria‟s cultural and
religious fabric, with modern institutions promoting its study and ensuring its
continuity. This paper explores the historical trajectory, key figures, literary
genres, and contemporary relevance of Arabic literature in Nigeria,
demonstrating how Islam has shaped and enriched this literary tradition
