Abstract

The formation of the Academic Planning Unit or the now popular directorates of academic planning across Nigerian universities was the initiative of the National University Commission (NUC) in the 1980s. This policy direction was actually meant for the coordination of academic programmes' uniformity in minimum curriculum, provision of strategic direction, streamlining of government policies, data generation & management and other relevant activities in the universities. At the centre of all these activities is the need for timely service delivery, prompt dissemination of information and efficiency. Interestingly, what can be considered as the core functions of the academic planning unit in the 1980s will become insignificant in the constantly expanding functions and made academic planning unit in the 2000s is considered.
