Schiff- bases, as obtained from sulfa drugs, act as ligands capable of effectively coordinating with metal ions. Complexes of mixed sulphathiazole and 3,3-thiodipropionic acid ligand, and alkaline earth metal complexes of sulfamethoxazole [4-amino-N-(5-methyl-3-isoxazolyl) benzenesulfonamide] and salicylaldehyde Schiff-base were synthesized by refluxing technique. The metal complexes obtained were characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic techniques (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. The Schiff-base ligand was observed to bind as a bidentate coordinating via the with N- and O- groups. Fourier transform infrared study of the Schiff-base showed a strong band at 3379cm-1 due to phenolic ʋ(O-H) which is seen to shift to 3471 and 3454 cm-1 in the Ca(II) and Mg(II) complexes respectively, while the ʋ(M-O) and ʋ(M-N) were seen at 565 and 450 cm-1 respectively in the [Ca(SMX-L)] complex, and at 560 and 460 cm-1 respectively in the [Mg(SMX-L)] complex. Antimicrobial behaviour of the mixed sulphathiazole and 3,3-thiodipropionic acid metal complexes showed activity against the Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Klebsiella pneumoniae (Klebsiella spp) Pseudomonas (Pseudo), Escherichia coli (E. coli)Microbes.
