Antibiotics are well known for fighting infections, but what is often left out of the discussion is their impact on mental health. Their misuse - and even prescribed use - can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, which plays an important role in how the brain functions. This disruption may cause neurotransmitter imbalances, subsequently leading to several neuropsychiatric disorders. As the world becomes more connected, it is important for healthcare workers to understand these effects. Improving education and encouraging global collaboration will help ensure antibiotics are used more wisely, support mental well-being, and allow exploration of safer alternative ways to treat infections.
